## Problems this solves

- Your analytics shows hundreds of visits a month and a handful of enquiries
- You've no idea which pages or ads actually bring in work
- Your phone number is hidden at the bottom of the page on mobile
- Your contact form asks for a postcode, a budget and a project description before anyone has spoken to you
- Your home page tries to say everything and ends up saying nothing
- People add products to the basket and never come back

## Key facts

- Conversion rate optimisation (CRO) means getting more enquiries from the visitors you already have
- One primary call to action per page, repeated, not five competing ones
- Click-to-call and a sticky contact bar on mobile
- Forms trimmed to the fields you actually use
- GA4 key events set up for calls, form sends and bookings
- Baymard Institute puts the average documented online cart abandonment rate at 70.22%, so checkout friction matters
- Business websites with conversion tracking from £500 + VAT

## What conversion-focused design means

A conversion is whatever counts as success on your site: a phone call, a form enquiry, a booking or a sale. Conversion-focused design shapes every page around that action. It's the cheapest way to grow, because you get more work from visitors you're already paying for through SEO, ads or word of mouth.

It isn't about tricks or countdown timers. Most gains come from removing doubt and effort: make the offer clear, make the next step obvious, and make that step easy. If your site gets visits but no enquiries, this is where to start.

## The basics we build into every page

- **A clear headline above the fold** saying what you do, who for and where. "Emergency plumber in Mansfield, 24/7" beats "Welcome to our website".
- **One primary call to action** per page, in a consistent colour that isn't used for anything else, repeated after each main section.
- **Click-to-call on mobile.** A tel: link in the header and a sticky bar at the bottom of the screen for trades and local services.
- **Short forms.** Name, phone or email, and a message. Each extra field is a reason to stop.
- **Trust near the button:** real reviews from your Google Business Profile, accreditations you genuinely hold, guarantees you actually offer, and photos of your real work.
- **Speed.** Slow pages lose people before they read anything, so we build to Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds.
- **A useful thank-you page** telling people what happens next and when.

## Measure first, then improve

You can't improve what you don't measure. On Business builds we set up Google Analytics 4 with key events for form submissions, phone link taps, email clicks and booking completions, and connect Search Console so you can see which searches lead to which pages. Where you run Google Ads, conversions can be shared with your ads account.

Tracking is set up to respect UK GDPR and PECR. Analytics and advertising cookies only load after consent, using a cookie banner that gives equal weight to accept and reject. That costs a little data but keeps you on the right side of the ICO.

## Ecommerce: where conversions leak

For shops the stakes are higher. Baymard Institute, which averages dozens of studies, puts the documented online shopping cart abandonment rate at 70.22%. Baymard also points out that many of those visitors were only browsing, so not every abandoned basket can be won back. Among shoppers who did mean to buy, the common reasons Baymard lists include extra costs appearing late, being forced to create an account and a long or complicated checkout. Each of those is a design decision you can change.

On ecommerce builds we show delivery costs early, allow guest checkout, offer express wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay where your platform supports them, and set up abandoned cart emails. Good product pages with clear photos, sizes and stock levels do the rest.

## Testing after launch

Once a site has steady traffic, we can test changes. Small sites rarely get enough visits for statistically sound A/B tests, so for most small businesses we use a simpler approach: make one change at a time, such as a new headline or a shorter form, and compare enquiries over four to six weeks with seasonal patterns in mind. Session recordings and heatmaps, used with consent, show where people get stuck.

Changes are charged at £45 an hour + VAT. For a dedicated campaign page, see landing page design.

## FAQs

### What is a good conversion rate for a small business website?

It varies hugely by sector, traffic source and what counts as a conversion, so we'd be wary of any single benchmark. The useful comparison is your own site before and after changes. That's why we set up tracking first: once you know your current rate, you can measure whether changes help.

### Do you guarantee more enquiries?

No honest agency can guarantee results, because enquiries also depend on your prices, reputation, market and how much traffic you get. What we can promise is a site built around proven conversion basics, with tracking that shows you exactly what is and isn't working.

### Will a cookie banner hurt my tracking?

It means you won't see data from people who reject analytics cookies, so your numbers will undercount. That's the law under PECR and UK GDPR. You still get enough data to spot trends, and Search Console reports search clicks without needing cookies on your site.

### Should every page have a contact form?

Every page should have a clear next step, but it doesn't need a full form. On most pages a button to your contact page and a click-to-call link work well. Service pages that get a lot of search traffic can benefit from a short inline form.

### Can you improve conversions on a site you didn't build?

Usually, yes. We review the analytics and key pages, then fix the biggest issues first, such as hidden phone numbers, long forms or slow pages. Work is charged at £45 an hour + VAT. If the platform makes basic changes too hard, we'll tell you.

### What is click-to-call and do I need it?

Click-to-call is a phone number coded as a link so mobile visitors can ring you with one tap. For trades, clinics, salons and anyone who takes bookings by phone, it's one of the simplest ways to get more enquiries. We track taps as conversions in GA4.
