> A website is usually missing from Google because it is new and not yet crawled, a noindex tag or robots.txt rule is blocking it, it has technical errors, or its pages do not match what people search. dijitul diagnoses and fixes indexing problems at £45 an hour + VAT, starting with Google Search Console.

## Key facts

- Search site:yourdomain.co.uk in Google to see roughly what is indexed
- A leftover noindex tag from staging is a common cause on new sites
- robots.txt containing Disallow: / blocks crawling of the whole site
- Google Search Console's URL Inspection tool shows why a page is not indexed
- Being indexed is not the same as ranking for competitive searches
- Nobody can guarantee Google rankings

## Is it missing, or just not ranking?

Type *site:yourdomain.co.uk* into Google. If no results appear, the site is not indexed: Google has not added it to its index at all. If pages appear but you cannot find them for searches like "electrician Mansfield", the site is indexed but not ranking. These are different problems with different fixes. Then search for your exact business name; if you do not appear for that, something is likely blocking indexing.

## Ten checks to run

- **Is the site new?** Google can take days or weeks to find a new site. Submit it in Search Console to speed things up.
- **Noindex tag.** View the page source and search for *noindex*. On WordPress, check Settings, Reading for "Discourage search engines".
- **robots.txt.** Visit yourdomain.co.uk/robots.txt. *Disallow: /* under User-agent: * blocks everything.
- **Search Console coverage.** The Pages report lists reasons pages are not indexed, such as "Excluded by noindex tag" or "Crawled, currently not indexed".
- **URL Inspection.** Inspect the home page to see what Googlebot sees and request indexing.
- **Redirects and duplicates.** http, https, www and non-www should all lead to one version. Canonical tags should point to the right URL.
- **Server errors.** Pages returning 404 or 5xx errors, or a site that is often down, will drop out.
- **Mobile access.** Google indexes with its smartphone crawler. A site that does not work on mobile can struggle to be indexed (Google Search Central, 2024).
- **Thin or duplicate content.** Pages with a few lines of text, or copied from elsewhere, may be crawled but not indexed.
- **Manual actions or security issues.** Rare, but listed in Search Console if they apply.

## If you are indexed but not ranking

- **Match the search.** One page per service, with the service and area in the title and H1. See which pages you need.
- **Google Business Profile.** For local searches, the map results come from Business Profiles. Verify yours, choose accurate categories and link to your site.
- **Content that helps.** Prices, process, areas covered and FAQs give Google and visitors something to work with.
- **Links and mentions.** Trade bodies, suppliers and local directories you genuinely belong to.
- **Speed and structure.** Fast pages, clean headings and schema markup such as LocalBusiness help Google understand the site.

Competitive searches take time. Be wary of anyone who promises page one; nobody controls Google's rankings.

For local businesses, also make sure your name, address and phone number are written the same way on your website, Google Business Profile and the main directories you are listed in.

## After a redesign: lost rankings

If traffic dropped after a new site launched, the usual cause is missing 301 redirects from old URLs, a noindex left on from staging, or pages that existed before and were not rebuilt. Compare the old site's top pages in Search Console with the new site, and redirect each old URL to its closest new page. Our pre-launch checklist covers how to avoid this.

## Setting up Google Search Console

If you have not used Search Console before, it is free and takes a few minutes. Go to search.google.com/search-console, add your site as a Domain property, and verify it by adding the TXT record Google gives you to your domain's DNS. Domain verification covers http and https, and www and non-www, in one go. Then submit your XML sitemap, which on WordPress is usually at /wp-sitemap.xml or a path set by your SEO plugin. Within a few days the Pages and Performance reports start to fill, showing which pages are indexed, which searches you appear for, and where you rank on average. Add your web designer as a user rather than giving them your Google login, so you stay in control.

## FAQs

### How long does it take for Google to index a new website?

It varies from a few days to several weeks. Submitting an XML sitemap and requesting indexing of the home page in Google Search Console usually speeds it up. Ranking for competitive searches takes much longer than being indexed.

### How do I check if Google has indexed my website?

Search site:yourdomain.co.uk in Google for a rough view, then use Google Search Console. Its Pages report shows which URLs are indexed and why others are not, and URL Inspection checks individual pages.

### Why does my site show for my business name but not my services?

Google has indexed you, but your pages do not match service searches well enough to outrank competitors. Dedicated service pages, local detail, a complete Google Business Profile and reviews usually help more than technical tweaks.

### Can I pay Google to index my website?

No. Indexing in organic results is free and cannot be bought. Google Ads can show you above organic results for chosen searches, but that is advertising and stops when you stop paying.

### My website disappeared from Google after a redesign. Why?

The most common reasons are a noindex tag left on from staging, missing 301 redirects from old page addresses, and pages that were removed. Check Search Console for errors and redirect old URLs to their nearest new pages.
