> dijitul builds responsive, mobile-first websites for UK businesses that adapt cleanly to every phone, tablet and desktop screen. We design the phone layout first, use fluid grids and responsive images, size tap targets for thumbs and test on real devices before launch. Responsive websites start from £250 + VAT, and every package is responsive as standard.

Price: From £250 + VAT

## Problems this solves

- Your site looks fine on a laptop but broken on a phone
- Customers have to pinch and zoom to read your prices
- Buttons are so small people tap the wrong one
- Images take ages to load on mobile data
- Menus overlap, forms run off the screen or pop-ups can't be closed
- Search Console reports poor mobile Core Web Vitals

## Key facts

- Every dijitul site is responsive as standard, from £250 + VAT
- Designed phone first, then scaled up to tablet and desktop
- Responsive images in WebP or AVIF using srcset and sizes
- Tap targets at least 24 by 24 CSS pixels, in line with WCAG 2.2
- Tested on real iOS and Android phones, not just a resized browser
- Built to Core Web Vitals targets measured on mobile

## Why responsive design is not optional

Your customers use their phones more than anything else to go online. Ofcom's Online Nation 2025 report found smartphones account for 75% of men's and 79% of women's time online in the UK. StatCounter's figures for September 2026 put mobile phones at around 54% of UK web page views, with tablets adding about 5%.

Google sees your site the same way. In June 2024 Google Search Central announced that after 5 July 2024 the remaining desktop-crawled sites would be crawled only with Googlebot Smartphone. In practice, the mobile version of your site is the version Google indexes and ranks. If content is hidden or broken on phones, it may as well not exist for search.

## How we build responsive sites

Responsive design means one website whose layout adapts to the screen, rather than a separate mobile site. The technical pieces we use on every build:

- **Viewport meta tag** so phones render at device width instead of a zoomed-out desktop page
- **Mobile-first CSS:** the base styles are for phones, with media queries adding layout as space allows. Typical breakpoints sit around 600, 900 and 1200 pixels, but we set them where the content needs them, not by device
- **Fluid grids** with CSS grid and flexbox, and container queries for components that sit in different widths
- **Fluid type** using clamp() so headings scale smoothly, with body text no smaller than 16px on phones
- **Responsive images** with srcset and sizes, served as WebP or AVIF, with width and height set so nothing jumps as it loads
- **Touch-friendly targets:** WCAG 2.2 sets a 24 by 24 CSS pixel minimum at level AA; we aim for around 44 pixels on primary buttons

We also test the awkward in-between sizes: small phones around 360 pixels wide, phones held sideways, tablets in portrait and laptops with browser windows half the screen wide. Those are where most layout bugs hide, because many designers only check one phone and one desktop.

## Speed on real phones

A phone on a patchy 4G signal is the hardest test for any website, and it is the one Google measures most. web.dev defines good Core Web Vitals as Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint within 200 milliseconds and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of real visits. On phones we hit those by:

- Loading the main image early and lazy loading the rest
- Keeping JavaScript small, since slow phones take longer to run it
- Avoiding layout shifts from late banners, fonts and embeds
- Serving smaller images to smaller screens

## Phone layouts that convert

Responsive isn't just about things fitting. It's about the phone layout doing its job. On mobile we put the phone number and the main action within thumb reach, often as a sticky bar. Forms use the right input types so phones show a number pad for phone numbers and an email keyboard for emails. Footers collapse into tap-to-open sections so contact details stay prominent instead of being buried under a long list of links. Tables of prices or specifications reflow or scroll inside their own box rather than breaking the page. More on this approach under conversion-focused web design and UX design.

## Fixing a site that isn't responsive

If your current site was built for desktop, it is usually quicker and cheaper to rebuild than to retrofit. A website redesign starts from £250 + VAT and keeps your rankings by redirecting old URLs. If the site is responsive but tired, a refresh may be enough. All our new builds are responsive as standard: Starter from £250 + VAT, Business from £500 + VAT and Ecommerce from £750 + VAT. See pricing or send us your URL and we'll tell you what's wrong on mobile.

## What you get

- Phone, tablet and desktop designs signed off before build
- Fluid layouts using CSS grid and flexbox
- A mobile menu and footer designed for one-handed use
- Sticky click-to-call or enquiry button on phones
- Responsive images served at the right size for each screen
- Device testing report before launch

## FAQs

### What is responsive web design?

Responsive web design is a way of building one website whose layout, images and text adapt to the size of the screen. The same page rearranges itself for a phone, tablet or desktop, rather than you maintaining a separate mobile site.

### Does responsive design affect Google rankings?

Yes. Google crawls and indexes sites with its smartphone crawler, so the mobile version of your site is the one it ranks. Mobile page speed and usability also feed into Core Web Vitals, which Google uses as part of its page experience signals.

### Is mobile-first the same as responsive?

Not exactly. Responsive means the layout adapts to any screen. Mobile-first is the approach of designing and coding for the smallest screen first, then adding layout for larger screens. We do both, which tends to produce leaner, faster pages.

### How much does a responsive website cost?

Every dijitul website is responsive at no extra cost. Prices start from £250 + VAT for a Starter site of up to 5 pages, £500 + VAT for a Business site of up to 15 pages and £750 + VAT for an online shop.

### How do you test that a site works on phones?

We test on real iPhones and Android phones as well as browser developer tools, checking layout, menus, forms, tap targets and speed. We also check Core Web Vitals with Google's tools before launch and in Search Console after real visitors arrive.

### Can you make my existing site responsive?

Sometimes, but older desktop-only sites are usually faster and cheaper to rebuild than to retrofit. We'll look at your site and tell you honestly. Redesigns start from £250 + VAT and include 301 redirects to protect your rankings.
