## Problems this solves

- Your WordPress site was built with a heavy page builder and takes six seconds to load on a phone
- There are 30 plugins installed and nobody knows which ones matter
- You can't change a phone number without breaking the layout
- Your developer disappeared and you don't have the admin login
- The site keeps getting hacked or showing spam links
- It looks dated and does not work properly on mobile

## Key facts

- WordPress runs 39.6% of all websites and 58.4% of sites with a known CMS (W3Techs, 18 October 2026)
- Built on the WordPress block editor, so you edit pages in the same blocks we design
- Custom theme, not a bought template with 40 plugins bolted on
- Lightweight build aimed at Core Web Vitals: LCP 2.5s or less, INP 200ms or less, CLS 0.1 or less
- WordPress software is free; you pay for hosting, domain and any premium plugins
- You own the site, the files and the domain. Move host or developer any time
- Typically live in 3 to 4 weeks for a Starter site, 5 to 6 weeks for Business

## Why WordPress is still the default choice

WordPress is free, open-source software. According to W3Techs on 18 October 2026, it runs 39.6% of all websites and 58.4% of every site that uses a content management system it can identify. That reach matters to you for practical reasons, not bragging rights.

- **No lock-in.** The software is free, so you can move your site to any host and hire any developer. If we disappeared tomorrow, thousands of UK developers could pick it up.
- **You can edit it.** The block editor lets you add pages, write posts and swap images without touching code.
- **It grows with you.** A five-page site can become a 50-page site with a blog, case studies, a jobs board or a shop, without starting again.

WordPress.org's release archive listed 7.1.3, dated 6 October 2026, as the latest release when we checked this month. We build on current releases and keep the code clean so updates don't break the design.

## The honest downsides

WordPress is not the right answer for everyone, and we would rather say so up front.

- **It needs looking after.** Core, theme and plugins all get updates. Skip them for a year and you are a target. Most hacked WordPress sites we see are running out-of-date plugins.
- **Plugins are a double-edged sword.** There is a plugin for everything, but each one adds code, and badly made ones slow the site down or open security holes.
- **Page builders cause bloat.** Many cheap WordPress sites are built with drag-and-drop builders that load large amounts of CSS and JavaScript on every page. That is often why a site fails Core Web Vitals.
- **Hosting quality varies.** Cheap shared hosting can make a good build feel slow.

If you want zero maintenance and a very small site, a static website or a hosted builder like Squarespace may suit you better. We will tell you if we think so.

## How we build WordPress sites

We design a custom theme around your content, then build it on the block editor using native blocks and our own block patterns. That means:

- **No heavy page builder.** Pages load only the code they need, which helps you hit the Google thresholds published on web.dev: Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of visits.
- **Locked design, editable content.** You can change words, images and add new pages, but you can't accidentally break the header or spacing.
- **Images done properly.** WordPress creates responsive image sizes automatically, and we serve WebP or AVIF where the host supports it.
- **Accessibility built in.** Colour contrast, heading order, focus states and form labels checked against WCAG 2.2 AA.
- **A short plugin list.** Usually a form plugin, an SEO plugin, security and backups. Each one earns its place.

If you are selling online, the same approach applies to WooCommerce.

## What a WordPress site really costs

The WordPress software costs nothing. The real costs are the build, hosting and upkeep.

| Item | What to expect |

| Design and build | Starter from £250 + VAT (up to 5 pages); Business from £500 + VAT (up to 15 pages with copywriting) |
| Online shop | WooCommerce builds from £750 + VAT |
| Hosting | Not included in the build. Ours starts from £1 a day + VAT, or use any host you like |
| Domain | Registered in your name, listed separately in the quote |
| Premium plugins | Only if you need one, priced in the quote before you commit |
| Care plan | Optional updates, backups and monitoring from £25 a month + VAT |

Small changes after launch are £45 an hour + VAT. Full details are on our prices page.

## Hosting and keeping WordPress safe

A WordPress site needs PHP, a MySQL or MariaDB database and an SSL certificate. Good hosting adds server-level caching, daily off-site backups and a firewall. Poor hosting is the most common reason a well-built site feels slow.

You can host anywhere. If you would like us to handle it, our sister company offers UK WordPress hosting from £1 a day + VAT. Either way, we set up automatic backups and limit login attempts before launch, and we hand over every login.

Already have a WordPress site that is slow, hacked or hard to edit? A redesign often keeps your content and URLs while replacing the theme and trimming the plugins, which protects the rankings you already have.

## Who WordPress suits

- **Service businesses** that need a page per service and a blog to rank locally: trades, solicitors, accountants, clinics.
- **Growing companies** that expect to add sections later, such as case studies, careers or a resource library.
- **Anyone who wants to own their site** rather than rent it from a builder platform.
- **Businesses planning to sell online** later, because WooCommerce bolts straight on.

Not sure? Our platform comparisons set out the trade-offs, or get in touch and we will recommend a platform based on what you need, not what is easiest for us to sell.

## What you get

- A custom WordPress theme designed around your brand and your customers
- Editable block patterns for the sections you will reuse, such as service panels and calls to action
- A short, vetted plugin list: forms, SEO, security and backups, nothing you don't need
- Mobile-first layouts with click-to-call and a working contact form
- Basic SEO foundations, schema markup and Google Search Console set up
- A recorded walkthrough showing you how to edit pages, posts and images
- Full admin access, theme files and a handover document

## FAQs

### Is WordPress free?

The WordPress software is free and open source. You still pay for hosting, a domain name, the design and build, and any premium plugins. We list every one of those costs in your quote, so there are no surprises after launch.

### Can I update my WordPress site myself?

Yes. We build on the block editor and give you a recorded walkthrough. You can edit text, swap images, add pages and write blog posts. The design is protected, so you can change content without breaking the layout.

### Do you use Elementor or Divi?

No. We build custom themes on the native block editor. Page builders like those load extra code on every page, which often slows sites down and ties you to one plugin. Our sites stay lighter and easier to hand over.

### Will my WordPress site get hacked?

Most WordPress hacks come from outdated plugins, weak passwords or poor hosting. We keep the plugin list short, set up login protection and backups, and recommend a care plan so updates are done every month. No platform is risk free, but upkeep removes most of it.

### Who owns the WordPress site you build?

You do. You get full admin access, the theme files and the domain in your name. You can move host or developer whenever you like. There is no lock-in and no licence fee for the theme we build.

### Can you fix or redesign my existing WordPress site?

Yes. We can rebuild the theme while keeping your content and URLs, remove plugins you don't need, and speed it up. Redesigns start from £250 + VAT depending on size, and small fixes are £45 an hour + VAT.
