Online Shop Design for UK Small Businesses

dijitul web design creates online shops for UK makers, independent retailers and small brands, from £750 + VAT. We design the shop around how your customers browse: simple navigation, useful filters, honest delivery costs shown early and a short checkout with guest buying, so more of the people who add to basket actually pay.

Sound familiar?

  • Your shop is a stock theme and looks like a hundred others
  • Customers email to ask about delivery because the site does not say
  • People cannot find products without scrolling through everything
  • Your checkout asks for an account before anyone can pay
  • Your Instagram followers like your products but rarely buy from the site
  • You run a physical shop and the website feels like an afterthought

Key facts

  • Online shops from £750 + VAT on Shopify or WooCommerce
  • Baymard Institute puts the average documented cart abandonment rate at 70.22% across 50 studies
  • Guest checkout as standard, because Baymard found 18% of US shoppers abandoned when forced to create an account
  • Delivery cost and dispatch times shown on product pages, not saved for the last step
  • Filters and menus planned from your real product range, not a generic theme demo
  • Designed and tested at phone width first
  • Returns and delivery pages written in plain English

Why small online shops lose sales

Most small shops do not have a traffic problem first. They have a leak. The Baymard Institute, which has run large scale checkout usability research for years, puts the average documented cart abandonment rate at 70.22%, based on 50 studies (figure last updated September 2025). Some of that is just browsing. The rest is fixable.

When Baymard asked US shoppers why they left during checkout, the top answers were:

  • Extra costs such as delivery, tax or fees were too high: 40%
  • Delivery was too slow: 20%
  • They did not trust the site with card details: 19%
  • The site wanted them to create an account: 18%
  • The checkout was too long or complicated: 17%
  • The returns policy was not good enough: 13%

Every one of those is a design decision. Show delivery prices and dispatch times early. Let people check out as a guest. Look like a real business. Keep the form short. Write a returns policy a customer can understand in ten seconds.

Designing the shop around your products

A shop selling 30 candles needs different navigation from one selling 3,000 car parts. Before designing anything we put your product list in a spreadsheet and look at how customers would naturally group it: by room, by occasion, by size, by material, by vehicle.

That gives us the menu, the collection pages and the filters. Filters only earn their place if they cut a list down quickly, so we use the attributes your customers actually choose by. For clothing that is size and colour. For furniture it might be width and finish. For gifts it is often price band and recipient.

Search matters once you pass a few hundred products. Shopify and WooCommerce both have built in search, and we can add predictive search so suggestions appear as people type. On phones the search box stays visible, not hidden behind an icon nobody notices.

A checkout that gets out of the way

Baymard's testing suggests an ideal checkout needs only 7 to 8 form fields, against an average of 14.88 fields on US sites. We cut ours down by:

  • Offering guest checkout, with an optional account after payment
  • Using postcode address lookup where the platform or an app supports it
  • Putting Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal buttons near the top so mobile buyers can skip typing
  • Combining first and last name fields where the platform allows
  • Hiding the discount code box behind a link so it does not send people off hunting for codes

On Shopify the checkout itself is controlled by Shopify, so we focus on the basket, the delivery options and the branding around it. On WooCommerce we can change more, which is useful if you need extra fields such as engraving text or a delivery date.

Looking trustworthy when nobody has heard of you

A new shop has to borrow trust. The cheapest way to earn it is to look like a real, reachable business:

  • Your company name, registered address and company number in the footer, as the Companies (Trading Disclosures) Regulations 2008 require for limited companies
  • A phone number or at least a named email address
  • A real about page with photos of you, your workshop or your shop
  • Clear delivery and returns pages that link from every product
  • Reviews, if you collect them through a recognised service

Photography does more for trust than any badge. Natural light, a plain background and a shot of the product in use beat a single blurry phone photo. Our product page design work goes into the detail.

Online shops for businesses with a real shop too

If you also trade from a high street unit, market stall or workshop, the website should work with that, not against it. We set up click-and-collect with a collection time window, local delivery by postcode for nearby customers and, where your till supports it, stock sync so you do not sell the last one twice. Shopify POS keeps both in one system. WooCommerce can connect to several EPOS systems through their own plugins.

We also add your shop to the site as a proper location page with opening hours and a map, which helps your retail business in local searches as well as online. For the full list of what our package covers, see ecommerce website design.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to set up an online shop?

dijitul designs and builds online shops from £750 + VAT. On top of that you pay for your platform plan or hosting, any paid apps, your domain and card processing fees charged by Stripe, PayPal or Shopify Payments. We list every running cost in your quote so there are no surprises after launch.

Is it worth having my own shop if I already sell on Etsy?

Many makers keep both. Etsy brings buyers who are already browsing. Your own shop lets you keep the customer relationship, avoid marketplace rules and build your brand in search. A common setup is Etsy for discovery, with repeat customers and social followers sent to your own site.

Do customers have to create an account to buy?

Not on shops we build. Guest checkout is on by default, because forcing an account is a known reason people abandon. Customers can choose to create an account after paying, which keeps their order history and makes the next purchase quicker.

Can I add products myself after launch?

Yes. Shopify and WooCommerce both let you add products, change prices, upload photos and manage stock without touching code. We train you on your own shop before launch, with a recorded walkthrough you can go back to when you forget a step.

How many products can you load for launch?

The package covers the product and category structure plus import from a clean spreadsheet or your old platform. Very large catalogues, or products that need writing from scratch, are priced in the quote. Product copy and extra design time beyond the package are £45 an hour + VAT.

Will my shop work on phones?

It is designed for phones first. We test the menu, filters, basket and checkout on real iPhone and Android devices, including the bank's 3D Secure step during payment, before anything goes live.
