- Online card rates with Shopify Payments: 2% + 25p on Basic, 1.7% + 25p on Grow, 1.5% + 25p on Advanced
- Using a third-party payment provider adds a Shopify fee of 2%, 1% or 0.6% depending on plan

- Paid apps for reviews, subscriptions or bundles add monthly costs on top
- Shopify runs 5.3% of all websites (W3Techs, 18 October 2026)
What Shopify is good at
Shopify is a hosted ecommerce platform. You pay a monthly subscription and Shopify looks after the servers, security, SSL and the checkout. You never need to update software or worry about the site going down on a busy day.
- Low maintenance. No plugin updates, no hosting to manage.
- A checkout customers trust. Shopify's checkout is fast and supports Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay.
- Selling everywhere. Sales channels connect your stock to Google, social platforms and an in-person point of sale.
- Easy to run. Adding products, processing orders and issuing refunds is straightforward for staff.
The trade-offs
Shopify is rented, not owned. That brings some limits worth knowing before you commit:
- Ongoing fees. The subscription never stops, and apps add their own monthly charges.
- Payment provider fees. Shopify's UK pricing page says that if you use a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify charges an extra 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced, on top of your provider's fees.
- Fixed URL structure. Products always sit under /products/ and collections under /collections/. You can't change that.
- Less flexible content. Blogging and content pages work, but they are basic compared with WordPress.
- Leaving takes work. Products, customers and orders export as CSV, but the theme can't move to another platform.
If those limits bother you, WooCommerce trades the convenience for control. We build on both and will recommend the one that suits your shop.
Shopify plans and real UK costs
Prices below are from Shopify's UK pricing page, checked in October 2026. They are Shopify's charges, not ours.
| Plan | Billed yearly | Billed monthly | Online card rate (Shopify Payments) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | £19/month | £25/month | 2% + 25p |
| Grow | £49/month | £65/month | 1.7% + 25p |
| Advanced | £259/month | £344/month | 1.5% + 25p |
| Plus | From £1,800/month | 1.3% + 25p | |
On top of the plan, budget for any paid theme, paid apps and your domain. Most small UK shops start on Basic and move to Grow when the lower card rate saves more than the higher subscription costs. Our build, from £750 + VAT, is a one-off cost. See our prices for what is included.
How we build Shopify stores
- Theme choice and design. We start from a fast, well-supported Online Store 2.0 theme and customise it with your brand, layouts and sections, rather than building from a blank file. That keeps it upgradable.
- Catalogue structure. Collections, tags, product types and metafields planned so filters work and collection pages can rank for real searches.
- Product pages that sell. Clear photos, price, delivery information and stock above the fold on phones, with reviews and size guides where they help.
- Payments and delivery. Shopify Payments, UK shipping profiles, weight-based rates, free delivery thresholds, local pickup and local delivery.
- Apps kept lean. Every app adds cost and often code. We use Shopify's built-in features first and only add apps that pay their way.
- Launch checks. Test orders, tax settings, 301 redirects from any old site, Merchant Centre feed and Search Console.
Moving to Shopify from another platform
We move shops to Shopify from WooCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, Etsy and older bespoke systems. Products, variants, images and customers usually come across through CSV imports or Shopify's import tools. Order history can be brought in where it matters for repeat customers.
Because Shopify fixes its URL structure, almost every old product and category address changes. We crawl the old site, build a full redirect list in Shopify's URL redirects settings and test the most visited pages after launch, so customers and search engines land in the right place. We also connect Search Console and submit the new sitemap on day one.
If you are not sure Shopify is right, read about WooCommerce first; it is the main alternative we would weigh it against.
Who Shopify suits
- Retailers and makers who want to sell without managing hosting or updates.
- Shops selling across online, social and in person, using one stock count.
- Brands expecting traffic spikes from promotions or press.
- Teams where non-technical staff will run day-to-day orders.
It suits less well if you need complex trade pricing, heavy content marketing, or want to avoid monthly fees altogether. Read about ecommerce website design or talk to us about your shop.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Shopify cost per month in the UK?
Shopify's UK pricing page lists Basic at £19, Grow at £49 and Advanced at £259 a month when billed yearly, or £25, £65 and £344 billed monthly, as checked in October 2026. Card processing fees, paid apps and themes are extra.
Is your Shopify build fee separate from Shopify's subscription?
Yes. Our design and build, from £750 + VAT, is a one-off payment to us. Your Shopify plan is paid directly to Shopify each month or year, in your name, so the store is always yours.
Do I have to use Shopify Payments?
No, but Shopify charges an extra fee on each order if you use a third-party provider: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced, according to its UK pricing page. Most UK stores use Shopify Payments to avoid that.
Can I move my store from Shopify later?
Products, customers and orders can be exported as CSV and imported elsewhere. The theme can't be moved, so the design would be rebuilt. We map old URLs to new ones with 301 redirects to protect your search traffic.
Can I edit my Shopify store myself?
Yes. Shopify's theme editor lets you change sections, images and text, and products are easy to add. We train your staff on orders, refunds, stock and discounts, and we record the session.
Do I need lots of apps?
Usually not. Shopify now handles many features natively, such as filters, local delivery and basic bundles. We only add apps that clearly earn their monthly cost, which keeps your bill and page weight down.
