Sound familiar?

  • You built a Squarespace site from a template and it looks like everyone else's
  • Your site looks fine on desktop but sections stack awkwardly on phones
  • You don't know which plan you need and are worried about overpaying
  • Google isn't showing your pages and you're not sure the SEO settings are right
  • Your Squarespace site gets visits but very few enquiries

Key facts

  • Squarespace's UK pricing page (October 2026) lists four plans: Basic, Core, Plus and Advanced
  • Plan prices run from £12 to £16 a month for Basic up to £79 to £89 a month for Advanced, depending on billing period
  • Basic charges a 2% fee on online store sales; Core and above charge 0%
  • Hosting, SSL and software updates are handled by Squarespace
  • Squarespace runs 2.4% of all websites (W3Techs, 18 October 2026)
  • Export to WordPress is partial: pages and blog posts move, products and styling do not
  • Very little to maintain, but limited room for custom functionality

Why people choose Squarespace

Squarespace is an all-in-one, hosted website builder. You pay one subscription and it covers hosting, SSL, security updates and the editor. Its templates are well designed and its visual editor, Fluid Engine, lets you drag blocks around a grid on desktop and adjust the mobile layout separately.

For a photographer, a consultant, a small restaurant or a shop with a handful of products, that simplicity is the point. There are no plugins to update and nothing for a hacker to exploit through out-of-date code.

Where Squarespace falls short

  • Limited custom functionality. You can add code blocks and CSS on paid plans, but you can't add server-side features. Complex booking rules, trade pricing or a members' directory usually hit a wall.
  • One place to live. You can't host a Squarespace site anywhere else.
  • Partial export. Squarespace exports a WordPress-format file. Pages, blog posts and basic blocks come across, but product pages, events, styling and custom CSS need rebuilding, and images are linked rather than included, so they must be downloaded separately.
  • Speed you can't fully control. You can compress images and limit heavy blocks, but you can't change how the platform loads its scripts.

If you need that control, WordPress or a static site are better routes.

Squarespace plan costs

These figures come from Squarespace's UK pricing page, checked in October 2026. Each plan shows two prices, for annual and monthly billing; paying annually is the cheaper option. Squarespace often runs introductory discounts, so check the current offer.

PlanPrice range shownOnline store feeCard rate (Squarespace Payments)
Basic£12 to £16/month2%From 2.0% + £0.25
Core£17 to £24/month0%From 2.0% + £0.25
Plus£29 to £36/month0%From 1.7% + £0.25
Advanced£79 to £89/month0%From 1.5% + £0.25

For a brochure site, Basic is usually enough. If you sell online, the 2% fee on Basic makes Core cheaper once you sell more than a few hundred pounds a month. Our design fee is separate and one-off; see our prices.

What we do differently from a DIY template

  1. Plan before picking a template. We work out the pages, the order of information and the one action you want visitors to take, then choose a starting point that fits.
  2. Design the mobile view properly. Fluid Engine lets you set a separate mobile layout. Most DIY sites never touch it, which is why text overlaps images on phones. We check every section at phone width.
  3. Set up SEO fields. Page titles, meta descriptions, clean URL slugs, heading order and alt text. Squarespace adds basic structured data; we make sure your business name, address and phone number are consistent with your Google Business Profile.
  4. Make contact easy. Click-to-call in the header on phones, short forms and clear calls to action on every page.
  5. Keep it fast. Images resized before upload, video embeds lazy-loaded and unnecessary animation removed.

Selling and booking on Squarespace

Squarespace includes an online store, appointment scheduling and member areas, which is enough for many small businesses:

  • Small shops with a few dozen products, simple variants and flat-rate UK delivery work well. Larger catalogues or complex delivery rules are better on Shopify.
  • Appointments for therapists, salons and consultants can be booked and paid for online through Squarespace's scheduling tool, which carries its own subscription.
  • Digital products and memberships carry their own transaction fees on each plan, so we check the numbers before recommending them.

We set these up so customers can buy or book in as few steps as possible on a phone.

Should you stay on Squarespace or move?

Stay if your site is mostly information, a portfolio or a small shop, and you value having nothing to maintain. A refresh can often fix the look and the enquiry rate without changing platform.

Move if you need features Squarespace can't offer, want lower long-term costs, or need full control of page speed. We can rebuild on WordPress or Shopify and map your old URLs to new ones so search rankings carry over. Our platform comparisons go into more detail, or ask us for a straight recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Squarespace a month in the UK?

Squarespace's UK pricing page, checked in October 2026, shows Basic at £12 to £16 a month and Advanced at £79 to £89 a month, depending on whether you pay annually or monthly. Core and Plus sit in between. Card processing fees are extra.

Do you design Squarespace sites or just templates?

We start from a Squarespace template because the platform requires one, then customise layouts, typography, colours, sections and the mobile view to fit your business. The aim is a site built around your content, not a template with your logo dropped in.

Is Squarespace good for SEO?

It covers the basics well: editable titles and descriptions, clean URLs, SSL, sitemaps and mobile layouts. It is weaker where you need fine control over page speed or schema. For most small local businesses, good content matters far more than the platform.

Can I move my Squarespace site to WordPress later?

Partly. Squarespace exports pages and blog posts in a WordPress format, but products, events and the design don't transfer, and images must be downloaded separately. We handle the rebuild and redirects if you decide to move.

Who pays the Squarespace subscription?

You do, directly to Squarespace, in your own account and on your own card. That keeps the site and the domain in your name if you ever change designer. Our design fee is a separate, one-off payment to us.
