Sound familiar?
- Your best work is buried on Instagram where nobody can find it in six months
- Galleries take ages to load and people leave before the first photo
- Your site is a grid of pictures with no words, so Google has nothing to rank
- You cannot add a new project without paying someone
- People admire the work but do not get in touch
- Your images turn up on other sites with no credit
Key facts
- Portfolio websites from £250 + VAT, or from £500 + VAT with a page per service written to rank
- Images served as WebP or AVIF in several sizes so galleries stay fast on phones
- Project pages that tell the story: brief, approach, result
- Copyright, creator and credit metadata kept in your images so Google Images can show it
- Galleries and lightboxes that work with keyboards and screen readers
- Easy to add new projects yourself, with no developer needed
- Clear enquiry form and click to call on every project page
Who needs a portfolio website
If clients choose you by looking at what you have done, your website is your shop window. That covers more businesses than people think:
- Photographers and videographers, from weddings to commercial work
- Graphic designers, illustrators and artists
- Architects, interior designers and garden designers
- Furniture makers, kitchen fitters and joiners
- Builders, landscapers and other trades with before and after photos
- Freelancers who need a professional home for their CV and case studies
A social media profile is not enough on its own. Posts get buried, you do not control the layout, and Google indexes little of it. A portfolio site gives you a permanent, searchable home for your work. For sector advice see web design for photographers or web design for builders.
Fast galleries without losing quality
Portfolio sites are image heavy by nature, which makes them easy to get slow. The fix is technical, not a compromise on quality:
- We serve each image in several widths and let the browser pick the right one for the screen.
- Modern formats such as WebP and AVIF are typically much smaller than JPEG at similar visual quality.
- The first visible image loads straight away and the rest load as you scroll.
- Image dimensions are set in the code so the page does not jump as photos appear.
That last point matters for Cumulative Layout Shift. Web.dev sets the good thresholds at 2.5 seconds for Largest Contentful Paint and 0.1 for CLS, and galleries are where both often fail. You upload full size images and the site handles the resizing, so you never need to export five versions of each photo.
Project pages that win work
A grid of pictures shows talent. A project page shows how you work, which is what a client is really buying. We build a template that makes writing one quick:
- The brief: who the client was, in general terms if needed, and what they wanted.
- The approach: the decisions you made and why.
- The result: the finished work, and the outcome if you can share it.
- Key facts: location, timescale, materials or tools, and your role.
A few hundred words per project gives search engines something to rank for searches like oak framed garden room or brand identity for a cafe. It also answers the questions people would otherwise phone to ask. End each project with a short call to action, such as Planning something similar? and a link to your enquiry form.
Protecting and crediting your images
Nothing on the web stops someone copying a picture they can see. Disabling right click only annoys genuine visitors. What does help:
- Metadata. Google Images can show creator, credit line and copyright notice from IPTC metadata embedded in the file. Many sites strip this on upload. We configure image handling to keep it.
- Sensible sizes. Serving images large enough to look sharp on screen but not print quality limits what a copier can do with them.
- Subtle watermarks on proofing galleries, where clients choose images before buying.
- Licensing information. If you sell image licences, Google supports structured data that can show a Licensable badge in Images.
Client galleries with private links, passwords and print sales can also be added through specialist gallery services that integrate with your site.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a portfolio website cost?
dijitul builds portfolio websites from £250 + VAT for up to five pages with a custom designed gallery and project template. Larger sites with a page per service and copywriting start from £500 + VAT. Hosting, your domain and any paid gallery or proofing service are extra.
Can I add new projects myself?
Yes. We build a project template so adding new work means uploading photos, writing a few paragraphs and pressing publish. The site resizes images automatically. We train you before launch and give you a recorded walkthrough to refer back to.
Will large photos slow my site down?
Not if it is built properly. We serve images in modern formats such as WebP and AVIF, in sizes matched to each screen, and load images further down the page only as you scroll. You upload full size files and the site handles the rest.
Should my portfolio be on Squarespace or WordPress?
Squarespace includes hosting and is simple to maintain, which suits many photographers and designers. WordPress gives more control over layout, SEO and features such as client areas or shops. We recommend one based on how much you want to manage yourself.
Can I sell prints or digital downloads too?
Yes. A small number of products can be added to most portfolio sites. If selling becomes a big part of the business, our Ecommerce package from £750 + VAT adds full shop features such as delivery rules and a Google Merchant Centre feed.
How do I stop people stealing my photos?
You cannot fully prevent copying, but you can make it less useful and easier to prove. Keep IPTC copyright metadata in your files, serve screen sized rather than print sized images, and watermark proofing galleries. Google Images can display the creator and copyright details from metadata.
