Sound familiar?

  • Your shop takes ages to load and customers drop out at checkout
  • Plugins conflict every time you run an update
  • You are paying a percentage of every sale to a platform and want to stop
  • Delivery charges are wrong for heavy items or certain postcodes
  • Product pages don't show up in Google Shopping
  • Stock is out of sync between the shop and your till

Key facts

  • WooCommerce is a free WordPress plugin, so there is no platform subscription or platform cut of sales
  • New stores use High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS), the default since WooCommerce 8.2 in October 2023 (WooCommerce developer docs)
  • Payment providers such as Stripe or PayPal still charge their own card fees
  • Full access to the code and database, so any feature can be built
  • Products, categories and filters structured for search, with Product schema
  • Google Merchant Centre feed for free and paid Shopping listings
  • Needs good hosting and regular updates, unlike hosted platforms

WooCommerce in plain terms

WooCommerce turns a WordPress website into a shop. The plugin is free and the store lives on your own hosting. Nobody takes a monthly platform fee or a percentage of sales for using it. Your only per-order cost is what your payment provider charges for processing the card.

That is the main difference from Shopify, where you rent the platform. With WooCommerce you own every file and every row in the database. You can export orders, change hosts or bring in a new developer without asking anyone's permission.

Pros and cons, honestly

StrengthsWeaknesses
No platform subscription or sales commissionYou are responsible for hosting, updates and security
Content and shop on one site, which helps SEO and bloggingPaid extensions for things like subscriptions or bookings add yearly licence costs
Unlimited customisation: trade pricing, product builders, custom delivery logicToo many extensions slow the store and cause update conflicts
Thousands of developers know it, so no lock-inBusy stores need better hosting than a brochure site

WooCommerce suits shops that want control, already run WordPress, sell to trade customers with special pricing, or have content that drives sales. If you want someone else to worry about servers and updates, Shopify may be a better fit, and we build on both.

How we build a WooCommerce shop

  1. Catalogue planning. We map categories, attributes (size, colour, material) and variations before design, so filters work and category pages can rank.
  2. Design for phones first. Product images, price, stock and the add-to-basket button sit above the fold on a 375px screen. Checkout fields are cut to what you actually need.
  3. Modern order storage. WooCommerce's developer documentation says HPOS was marked stable in version 8.2 and is on by default for new stores. It keeps orders in dedicated tables rather than the general posts table, which is faster on busy shops. We check every extension we install is HPOS compatible.
  4. Payments and delivery. Card payments with Apple Pay and Google Pay, then UK shipping zones, weight or basket-value rates, free delivery thresholds, click-and-collect and local delivery by postcode.
  5. Search visibility. Product and Offer schema, clean URLs, canonical tags on filtered pages and a Google Merchant Centre feed.
  6. Speed. Lightweight theme, compressed WebP images and caching rules that never cache the basket or checkout.

Real running costs

Because WooCommerce is free, the running costs are the parts around it:

  • Hosting. A shop needs more than basic shared hosting. Budget for a plan with enough PHP workers and memory for your traffic.
  • Payment fees. Charged per transaction by your provider. Check their current UK pricing before you choose.
  • Extension licences. Optional paid extensions usually renew yearly. We list any your shop needs in the quote.
  • Updates. Core, WooCommerce and extensions need testing and updating. Our sister company's care plans start from £25 a month + VAT, or you can do it yourself.

The build itself starts from £750 + VAT. Large catalogues, B2B pricing, subscriptions or complex integrations get a fixed quote. See our prices.

Checkout and product pages that convert

Most lost sales happen on the product page or in checkout, so that is where we spend the design time.

  • Product pages show price, stock, delivery cost and the add-to-basket button without scrolling on a phone. Variations use clear swatches or buttons rather than long dropdowns.
  • Trust details sit beside the button: returns policy, delivery times and accepted payment methods.
  • Checkout asks only for what you need to fulfil the order. Guest checkout stays on, address lookup speeds up typing, and wallet payments let returning shoppers pay in a couple of taps.
  • Abandoned cart emails remind shoppers who left items behind, sent only where they have consented, in line with PECR.

Moving to WooCommerce

We move shops to WooCommerce from Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Magento and older WooCommerce builds. Products, customers and order history can usually be imported via CSV. We map old product and category URLs to new ones with 301 redirects so you keep search traffic, and we test checkout end to end before switching the domain.

Already on WooCommerce but unhappy? Often the fix is a new theme and fewer extensions rather than a new platform. Read more about ecommerce website design or ask for a quote.

Frequently asked questions

Is WooCommerce really free?

The plugin is free. You pay for hosting, your domain, payment processing fees per order, and any paid extensions you choose. There is no platform subscription and no commission on sales, which is the big difference from hosted platforms like Shopify.

WooCommerce or Shopify: which is better?

Neither is better for everyone. WooCommerce gives you full control and no platform fees but needs hosting and upkeep. Shopify handles hosting and security for a monthly fee. Shops with lots of content or unusual pricing often suit WooCommerce; shops wanting low maintenance often suit Shopify.

Can WooCommerce handle a large catalogue?

Yes, with the right hosting and build. Thousands of products are fine if the theme is light, filtering is done efficiently and the server has enough resources. Very large catalogues get a fixed quote so we can plan hosting and import properly.

Can you connect WooCommerce to my till or accounts?

Often, yes. Many EPOS and accounting systems have WooCommerce connectors for stock and orders. We check what your systems support before quoting, and include the integration where a reliable connector exists.

Do you set up VAT and UK delivery?

Yes. We configure VAT display and rates as your accountant advises, then UK shipping zones, weight or basket-based delivery rates, free delivery thresholds, click-and-collect and local delivery by postcode. Every rule is tested with real orders before launch.

Can you take over an existing WooCommerce shop?

Yes. We start with a review of the theme, extensions and hosting, then fix what is slowing it down or breaking. Small fixes are £45 an hour + VAT; rebuilds are quoted.
