Sound familiar?
- Your site looks like every competitor that bought the same theme
- The theme forces layouts that don't fit your content
- You need a feature the theme simply can't do
- Your site is weighed down by dozens of plugins you don't use
- Your brand has been squeezed into a template's colours and fonts
Key facts
- Designed from scratch for your business, not a resold theme
- Phone, tablet and desktop layouts designed and signed off
- Custom from £250 + VAT; complex builds get a fixed quote
- Built on WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce, Webflow or as a static site
- Custom post types and fields so content is easy to manage
- Web apps and custom software handled by our sister company
What custom really means
Plenty of websites marketed as custom are a commercial theme with your logo dropped in. That can be fine, but it is not custom. A custom design starts with your content and your customers. We plan the pages, sketch layouts as wireframes, then design the visual layer to fit your brand. Only then do we build.
The result is a site where the layout serves the content. A plumber's site might lead with an emergency call panel. A solicitor's might lead with practice areas and a clear route to an appointment. A manufacturer's might need a filterable product range with downloadable spec sheets.
Custom design versus a theme
| Commercial theme | dijitul custom design | |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Fixed by the theme author | Designed around your content |
| Code | Built for every possible use, often heavy | Only what your site needs |
| Speed | Often needs work to pass Core Web Vitals | Built to the targets from day one |
| Uniqueness | Shared with thousands of sites | Yours alone |
| Updates | Theme updates can break customisations | No third party theme to conflict |
Lean custom code matters for performance. Google's web.dev guidance treats a page as good when its Largest Contentful Paint is 2.5 seconds or less, its Interaction to Next Paint is 200 milliseconds or less and its Cumulative Layout Shift is 0.1 or less. Heavy multipurpose themes make those harder to hit.
Custom features we often build
- Service area pages generated from one set of content, each with its own heading and copy
- Project or case galleries with filters by type or location
- Quote request forms with conditional questions, file upload and routing to the right inbox
- Team directories and staff profiles managed as simple entries
- Product catalogues without a checkout, for trade and B2B
- Booking integrations with third party calendars, see booking website design
- Multilingual content, see multilingual website design
On WordPress we use custom post types and fields so these are simple forms to fill in, not page builder layouts to wrestle with. If you need a content system built from the ground up, see custom CMS website design.
How custom projects are priced
Custom design is included in every package. Starter from £250 + VAT covers up to 5 custom pages. Business from £500 + VAT covers up to 15 pages with copywriting and schema markup. Ecommerce starts from £750 + VAT.
Where a project goes beyond a package, such as large catalogues, membership platforms, complex integrations or multilingual sites, we give a fixed quote after a scoping call. You see the full figure before committing. Extra design time on top of a package is £45 an hour + VAT. Web applications, portals and custom software sit with our sister company dijitul developments.
How a custom design is put together
Custom design follows a set sequence so you can see and approve the work at each step:
- Discovery: who your customers are, what they ask before buying and what you want them to do on the site.
- Sitemap and wireframes: grey box layouts of the key pages showing content order and calls to action, without colours or images to distract.
- Visual design: type, colour, imagery and components applied to the wireframes for phone and desktop. You comment and sign off.
- Component library: the approved design is broken into reusable blocks so new pages stay consistent.
- Build and test: coded to Core Web Vitals and WCAG 2.2 AA targets, then tested on real iOS and Android phones and current desktop browsers.
Because you sign off the layout before the visuals and the visuals before the build, there are no large surprises at the end.
Is custom right for you?
Custom design is the right choice if your content or process doesn't fit a standard pattern, if you want to stand apart from competitors, or if speed and accessibility are priorities. If you simply need a clear, credible small site quickly, our small business website package is still custom designed, just with a tighter scope. Read more about the discipline on web design, see UI design for the visual layer, or talk to us about your idea.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a custom website cost?
With dijitul, custom design starts from £250 + VAT for up to 5 pages and £500 + VAT for up to 15 pages with copywriting. Projects with memberships, complex integrations or multiple languages get a fixed quote after a scoping call.
Can I still edit a custom website myself?
Yes. We build custom designs on content systems such as WordPress, Shopify or Webflow, with editable fields for text, images and listings. You get a walkthrough and, on Business packages, a recorded training session.
Is custom design slower to deliver?
Not much. Starter projects are typically live in 3 to 4 weeks and Business projects in 5 to 6 weeks. Projects with custom features take longer and the timeline is set out in your quote.
Do you build web applications?
Websites with custom features, yes. Full web applications, customer portals and bespoke software are built by our sister company dijitul developments, which means you can keep design and development under one family of businesses.
Will a custom website be faster than a theme?
Usually, yes. A custom build includes only the code your pages need, which makes it easier to meet Google's Core Web Vitals targets for loading, responsiveness and visual stability than a multipurpose theme carrying features you never use.
