What a holistic website audit covers

Most audits look at one thing. An SEO tool counts missing meta descriptions, a speed test scores one page, and nobody asks whether the site actually persuades anyone to get in touch. Our audit looks at the whole site the way a customer meets it, then checks what sits underneath.

AreaWhat we check
DesignFirst impression on a phone, visual hierarchy, consistency, readable type sizes, image quality
UXNavigation, page structure, how many taps it takes to reach a price or a phone number, error states
ContentWhether each page answers the questions buyers ask, out-of-date information, thin or duplicated pages
ConversionOne clear call to action per page, click-to-call, form length, trust signals, checkout or booking friction
SpeedCore Web Vitals, image formats and sizes, scripts, fonts, hosting response time
AccessibilityContrast, keyboard use, focus states, alt text, form labels, touch target size
SEO basicsTitles, headings, indexing, sitemap, schema.org markup, internal links, Google Business Profile link
SecurityHTTPS, software and plugin versions, admin login exposure, backups, form spam protection
LegalCompany and contact disclosures, privacy notice, cookie consent, pricing and terms for online sales

The aim is to find the few things holding the site back. If your real problem is that people land on the homepage and cannot work out what you do, a perfect speed score will not fix it. Our conversion-focused web design page explains how we think about turning visits into enquiries.

How the audit works

  1. Free chat and quote. You tell us what worries you and what the site is meant to do. For a small brochure site we work at £45 an hour + VAT and tell you the likely hours up front. For larger sites, shops or membership platforms we give a fixed quote.
  2. Read-only access. Ideally viewer access to Google Analytics and Search Console. We do not need your admin password for most checks, and we never change anything during the audit.
  3. Crawl and measure. We crawl every page to find broken links, redirect chains, missing titles and orphan pages, then run speed and accessibility tests on each type of page: home, service, product, blog and contact.
  4. Real-device testing. We go through your main journey on an actual phone, a tablet and a desktop, as a customer would: find a service, check a price, fill in the form or buy something.
  5. Report and call. You get a written report with screenshots and a ranked fix list, then we talk it through.

You keep the report, with no obligation to use us for the fixes.

The checks with hard numbers behind them

Some parts of an audit are judgement. Others have clear published thresholds, and we report against those.

  • Speed. Google's web.dev guidance says a page is good when, at the 75th percentile of real visits, Largest Contentful Paint is 2.5 seconds or less, Interaction to Next Paint is 200 milliseconds or less and Cumulative Layout Shift is 0.1 or less. Chrome for Developers documentation notes that PageSpeed Insights field data covers a rolling 28 days with a two-day delay, so a fix made today will not show in those numbers straight away. Our Core Web Vitals guide explains each metric.
  • Accessibility. We test against WCAG 2.2 level AA, including text contrast of at least 4.5:1 for body copy, visible focus, labelled form fields and touch targets of at least 24 by 24 CSS pixels. See WCAG explained.
  • Legal disclosures. The Electronic Commerce (EC Directive) Regulations 2002 require your business name, geographic address and email address, plus your VAT number if registered. Limited companies must also show their registered number, registered office and part of the UK where they are registered, under SI 2015/17. Our guide to what a UK business website must show has the full list.
  • Cookies. Under PECR, as amended by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, advertising and remarketing tags still need consent before they load. We open the site in a private window, refuse everything and record what still fires. Our cookie banner rules guide covers the exceptions.

When you need a specialist audit instead

A holistic audit is broad on purpose. It tells you where the problems are and how serious they look. Sometimes one area needs a much deeper look, and the dijitul network has specialists for each.

  • In-depth SEO. Our audit covers SEO basics: indexing, titles, structure and schema. If you need keyword research, competitor gap analysis, backlink review or AI search visibility, that is a full SEO audit from Search Engine Tuning.
  • Full accessibility audit. We spot-check the issues that affect most visitors. If you need a page-by-page review against every WCAG 2.2 AA success criterion, with screen reader testing and an accessibility statement, book a website accessibility audit from dijitul support.
  • Security. We flag obvious risks such as outdated plugins, no HTTPS or no backups. Hardening, malware clean-ups and ongoing monitoring are handled by the website security team at dijitul support.

If an audit shows one of these needs attention, we say so in the report and explain why, so you can decide whether it is worth it.

What happens after the audit

Most audits end in one of three places.

  • Fix it. The site is sound but has a list of specific problems: slow images, a confusing menu, a form that fails on iPhones, missing company details. We can work through them at £45 an hour + VAT, or your own developer can use the report.
  • Refresh it. The structure works but the look and copy have dated. A website refresh keeps what is good and replaces what is not.
  • Rebuild it. The platform is out of date, the site cannot be fixed economically, or it was never built to win enquiries. A website redesign starts from £250 + VAT for a small site. Our guide on whether to redesign or start again helps you weigh it up.

We will tell you honestly which one we think fits, including when the answer is to leave the site alone. To book an audit, get in touch with your web address and what is worrying you.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a website audit cost?

Our audits are charged at £45 an hour + VAT. For a small brochure site we tell you the expected hours before we start, so there are no surprises. Larger sites, online shops and membership platforms get a fixed quote after a quick look at the size and complexity of the site.

What do you need from me to run the audit?

Your web address, a short note on what the site is meant to do and what worries you, and ideally viewer access to Google Analytics and Search Console. We do not need admin logins for most checks, and nothing on your site is changed during the audit.

Is this the same as an SEO audit?

No. We check SEO basics such as indexing, titles, headings, sitemaps and schema, alongside design, conversion, speed, accessibility, security and legal points. For keyword research, competitor analysis, backlinks and AI search visibility you need a dedicated SEO audit, which we can point you to.

Will the audit tell me if I need a new website?

Yes. The report ends with a clear recommendation: fix specific problems, refresh the design and copy, or rebuild. We explain the reasoning and roughly what each route involves, and we will say so if the site is in decent shape and does not need much work.

Can my own developer make the fixes?

Yes. The report is written so any competent developer can act on it, with screenshots, page addresses and the reason each fix matters. You own the report. If you would rather we did the work, we can quote for it or work through the list at our hourly rate.

Do you audit Wix, Squarespace and Shopify sites?

Yes. The checks apply to any platform: WordPress, WooCommerce, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow or hand-coded sites. Some fixes are limited by what the platform allows, and we note where a limitation is the platform rather than the way the site was built.

Does the audit make my website legally compliant?

It checks the common legal must-haves for a UK business website, such as company disclosures, privacy notice and cookie consent, and flags anything missing. It is not legal advice. For anything complex, such as regulated financial services or health claims, check with a solicitor or your professional body.
