Sound familiar?
- You have outgrown Wix or Squarespace and keep hitting its limits
- Your old CMS is years out of date and nobody wants to touch it
- You are worried about losing the Google rankings you worked hard for
- Your shop needs features your current platform cannot do
- The last time a site was moved, old links all ended in 404 errors
- You do not know which of your pages actually bring in enquiries
Key facts
- Small site migrations from £250 + VAT; shops moving to Shopify or WooCommerce from £750 + VAT
- Every old URL mapped to a new one and permanently (301) redirected
- Google Search Central advises keeping redirects in place for at least a year
- Wix does not support exporting sites to another host, so pages are rebuilt rather than copied
- Squarespace's WordPress export leaves out store pages, product blocks and all but one blog
- Shopify only redirects from URLs that no longer load a page, so old paths must be retired first
- Forms, analytics and Search Console moved and tested before the switch-over
Why website migrations lose rankings
Google ranks individual pages at individual addresses. Move to a new platform and most of those addresses change. A Wix blog post at one path becomes a WordPress post at another; a Squarespace product becomes a Shopify product under /products/. If nothing tells Google where each old page went, it sees hundreds of pages disappear and new ones appear, and the links other sites gave you point at error pages.
The usual causes of a post-migration drop are:
- No redirects, or every old page redirected to the homepage
- Pages quietly dropped because they looked unimportant but brought in traffic
- Page titles, headings and meta descriptions lost in the copy and paste
- Internal links still pointing at old addresses
- A staging site's "noindex" setting left switched on at launch
- Tracking not reinstalled, so nobody notices for weeks
Google Search Central says that for small and medium sites it can take a few weeks for most pages to move, and rankings may fluctuate during that time. A careful migration keeps that wobble short. A careless one can take months to recover from.
Platform by platform: what you can bring with you
| Moving from | What exports | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Wix | Wix's support documentation says it does not support exporting sites to an external host | Rebuild pages on the new platform, copying text and downloading images, then recreate each URL or redirect it |
| Squarespace | Squarespace's WordPress export covers layout pages, one blog with its posts, and text and image blocks. It excludes store pages, product, video and audio blocks, album, portfolio and index pages, drafts and custom CSS | Import what exports, rebuild the rest, and copy images across before the Squarespace plan is cancelled, because Squarespace warns imported image links can stop working afterwards |
| Old CMS (Joomla, Drupal 7, bespoke) | Usually a database and file backup | Script the content across where it is clean, rebuild by hand where it is not |
| Old WooCommerce or Magento shop | Products, customers and orders, usually by CSV or a migration app | Map product, category and variant data, then test checkout end to end |
Where you are moving to matters as much. WordPress lets us set permalinks to match your old URLs exactly, which means fewer redirects. Shopify uses fixed patterns such as /products/, /collections/, /pages/ and /blogs/, so almost every URL changes and redirects do the heavy lifting. Shopify's Help Center confirms its redirects only work from URLs that no longer load a page, and allows up to 100,000 redirects per store.
URL mapping and redirects, step by step
- Inventory. We crawl the live site, pull your sitemap and export pages with impressions or clicks from Search Console, so nothing that earns traffic is missed. Backlinked pages from old campaigns often only show up here.
- Decide each page's future. Keep, merge into a stronger page, or retire. Retired pages redirect to the closest relevant page, not the homepage.
- Build the map. A spreadsheet with every old path, its new path and notes. You see it and can query it before anything goes live.
- Load the redirects. When your domain moves away from Wix or Squarespace, the old platform stops serving it, so redirects are set on the new one: a redirect plugin or server rules on WordPress, the URL redirects import on Shopify. Google recommends permanent server-side redirects such as 301 or 308.
- Test before and after DNS. We test the redirect list on the new site, switch DNS, then test every old URL again against the live domain.
- Tell Google. Submit the new sitemap in Search Console and watch the coverage reports. The Change of Address tool is only needed if the domain itself changes.
Google advises keeping redirects for at least a year. We recommend leaving them in place indefinitely, because old links in emails, directories and social posts keep working.
Forms, tracking and the bits people forget
- Forms. Wix and Squarespace forms do not come with you. We rebuild them, add spam protection, and test that submissions reach the right inbox and do not land in junk. If you collect personal data, the privacy notice is updated to match the new setup.
- Email. Moving a domain's DNS can break email if the MX records are not copied. We check them before the switch.
- Analytics and tags. Google Analytics, Search Console, Tag Manager, Meta Pixel and any call tracking are reinstalled behind a cookie banner that follows the UK cookie rules.
- Google Business Profile. The website link is checked so it points at a live page, not a redirect chain.
- Structured data. Organisation, LocalBusiness, Product and FAQ schema rebuilt for the new templates.
- Speed. A migration is a chance to fix images and scripts. We aim for the Core Web Vitals thresholds published by web.dev: LCP 2.5 seconds or less, INP 200 milliseconds or less, CLS 0.1 or less.
WordPress also needs good hosting. Ours is run by dijihost from £1 a day + VAT, though you are free to host anywhere.

- Online shops moving to Shopify or WooCommerce: from £750 + VAT.
- Large catalogues, membership sites or complex integrations: a fixed quote.
- Redirect-only jobs, where someone else built the new site and the redirects were missed: £45 an hour + VAT.

Frequently asked questions
Will I lose my Google rankings if I move platform?
Some short-term movement is normal. Google Search Central says it can take a few weeks for most pages of a small or medium site to move. With every old URL mapped and 301 redirected, content and titles kept, and the new sitemap submitted, rankings usually settle back. Big, lasting drops tend to come from missing redirects.
Can you export my Wix site to WordPress?
Not directly. Wix's own support documentation says it does not support exporting sites to an external host. We rebuild the pages on WordPress, copy your text, download and optimise your images, then match or redirect every old URL so visitors and Google land on the right page.
What happens to my Squarespace shop products?
Squarespace's WordPress export does not include store pages or product blocks, so products are moved separately. We rebuild the catalogue on Shopify or WooCommerce with titles, descriptions, prices, variants and images, then redirect each old product URL to its new one.
How long should redirects stay in place?
Google advises keeping redirects for at least a year so ranking signals pass to the new pages. We recommend keeping them indefinitely. They cost nothing to leave in place, and old links in emails, directories and social posts keep working.
Will my site go offline during the move?
No. We build and test the new site on a private address while the old one stays live. On launch day we switch the DNS. Most visitors see the new site within hours, and there is no gap where the site is missing.
Do I need a new domain name to change platform?
No, and we usually advise against it. Keeping the same domain means only page URLs change, which is simpler for Google. If you do change domain, we also use Search Console's Change of Address tool and redirect every old address on the old domain.
Can I move from WordPress to Shopify too?
Yes. Any direction works: WordPress to Shopify, Shopify to WooCommerce, or an old Joomla or Drupal site to WordPress. The same process applies: inventory, URL map, content move, redirects, tracking and post-launch checks.
